Wizards announced at Gen Con that the Dark Sun setting is being revived for D&D 4E. Dark Sun is a blasted world, torn asunder by magic. Psionics, which will be brought to 4E just months before with the Player’s Handbook 3, play a major part in the setting. The original Dark Sun is quite the legend in many RPG circles, and that legend was directly responsible for the revival of Dark Sun.
It sounds like just the kind of setting I’m looking for at the moment. Between Dark Sun and Eberron, I may just have the impetus to play 4E seriously. How about you? What is your reaction to Dark Sun? Excitement? Dismay? How does it make you feel about 4E?
We played a ton of 2E Dark Sun back in my Air Force days. It was a good setting, but I think it didn’t quite fit right for the 2E system. I think it might be a much better fit for 4E, which seems to be geared more inherently towards the “points of light” campaign concept from its inception, as well as being more flashy-combat oriented. I think it has the potential to make a good fit.
I never played the 2E version of Dark Sun, but I can see what you mean. The interview seemed to indicate something of the sort re: suitability for 4E. I can’t wait to see it, but I’ll hold off on buying 4E/raving too much about Dark Sun until I have gotten my grubby little paws on a copy.
I’m also intrigued by how the game and the post-apocalyptic nature fit with the “points of light” idea. I’ve been meaning to write something on how style of gaming reflects on the culture at the time, and this will certainly be a part of that.
This is an old post but I just came across it.
Personally, I love Dark Sun and I think it was done very well for 4e. I’m planning a campaign right now that I will be running play-by-post on SomethingAwful.com.
I’ll keep an eye on it! I’m hoping to start a game in my new city in the next few weeks and am considering Dark Sun as well. Good gaming!
